Summer is Here; Keep Your Kids Near

With 90 degree weather beating down on St. Louis this past weekend, we are reminded that summer is quickly approaching. The kids are out of school, the Cardinals are back in business, and you can practically smell the burgers grilling. But summer is also a time to remind our children to be cautious and careful to avoid injuries, which are more prevalent in the summer months. I am sure we all can remember the bactine and the buttery fly bandages of our youth. But what about the injuries that go past a bump and a scrape?

Injuries are actually the leading cause of death for children, according to an article from the Wall Street Journal. So, according to the Journal, what are the five biggest dangers to watch out for this summer?

1.       Suffocation or strangulation. This is most common in children under 1 year old and can be caused by improper sleeping arrangements. Make sure that you remove pillows and soft bedding from a crib and make sure all safety features are secure. Plus, don’t forget to watch for summer toys that also pose a suffocation injury.

2.      Drowning. Since the summer time is pool season, make sure that you always have an eye on your child, especially if you have a pool at your home. Pool covers are inherently dangerous by design and many children are lost to this dangerous product.

3.      Car Accidents. Summertime means increased travel for many families. More cars on the road typically means more car accidents. As the leading cause of death for young people, it is important to avoid car accidents by driving safely and cautiously. With all the fun distractions of summer the roads are even more dangerous. Be careful folks.

4.      Car incidents. Non-traffic accidents can be just as deadly for children. Never leave your children unattended in the car, make sure they aren’t behind you when backing out, and try to foresee any hazards within your vehicle.

5.      Brain injuries. Make sure kids are always buckled in if they are passengers in your car or have a helmet on if they are riding a bike or rollerblades. Head injuries have some of the worst consequences of any accident related injury.

Be careful this time of year. Accidents are nearly impossible to predict. You can, however, prepare for them by being cautious and knowing what to do in the event that an accident occurs. What do you need to know? If your child is involved in a car accident, you will want to avoid the repercussions of making a mistake when dealing with the insurance company.
