Kristi,

I deeply apologize for your loss, I can’t imagine going through a situation like this. There is nothing I can do or say that will change what you have experienced, especially with the suspicions surrounding the accident. I have updated the post to include charges Mr. Hansell is facing. Drunk drivers in general are thoughtless and we aggressively pursue that type of case because you can’t count on the criminal justice system to do anything that would ever replace the life of a loved one.We just want to get the right facts out there to help stop reckless driving and you coming forward is brave. We appreciate any additional comments to help clear up any possible inconsistencies in the reports we get.

Sean-
Although we strive to bring accurate reporting to our blog, until we have more from official sources as to the reason why he was driving in the wrong direction, we simply cannot state with certainty he was intoxicated. Although we respect and value the opinions and thoughts of our readers, until we have more evidence from an official source we simply can't make accusations based on what we think 'most likely' happened. Thank you for reading our blog and contributing your opinions.

Mr. Hansell was drunk! Rick was my everything! Together we were raising our 3 kids. Nobody should have to go through this. I was on the phone with Rick when Mr. Hansell collided with him. It will never leave my ears, I hear it everytime I close my eyes. Rick was a veteran and a corrections officier at a level 5 camp. What killed him? A 31 year old drunk driver. Senseless!

The even more upsetting story behind this incident is that Mahan was riding across the country with his final destination being the Tour de Tucson. With months of preparation and being so driven, to be left on the side of the road blows my mind. He could have died helplessly simply because this driver didn't stop. Please, if anyone has any information contact the authorities to help Mahan get justice.

My heart goes out to you, Samantha for the loss of your brother. I am sure that you have a void in your heart that will never be filled, but I pray that in time you can heal and find a way to forgive Ronnie. I have lost three brothers in three separate fatal car accidents, each involved a drunk driver. In 1980 my brother who did not drink was killed by an oncoming car driven by a drunk driver. In 1992, another brother was killed in a car accident in which he was at fault and also under the influence of alcohol and in 2003 my youngest brother, a father of four children under that age of six killed himself and one passenger when he was involved in a one car accident as a result of drunk driving. My mother, has also cried on my shoulder and I have cried every day. I miss my brothers terribly, but thankfully the family of my youngest brother's passenger has forgiven him. They realize that their child made a choice to get in the car driven by my brother. I know this does not excuse his action. I have also forgiven the drunk driver who killed my brother and it has helped me to move on. I am no longer filled with bitterness. I will always be sad and will always miss my brothers but punishing the young kid who was driving drunk and hit my brother head on will not bring my brother back. The driver was young, stupid and imature and made a bad choice and he will have to live with it for the rest of his life. I have never once regretted my family's decision not to prosecute him or to file an action in civil court. I would hate for the accident to have ruined two lives. Today, he is a remarkable man who educates young people about the dangers of drinking and driving.

The reason I am responding to your comment is because I met Ronnie Langford, briefly last summer and I can assure you that he is full of grief, guilt and remorse. He will have to live with the guilt of being the driver of the car when his best friend died. He is seeking treatment and wants to make his life better.

I am not in any way depricating the terrible loss you suffered; I just feel that if you could forgive Ronnie you may be able to make peace with your brother's death. You knew your brother better than anyone. Ask yourself is you honestly believe your brother would want Ronnoe to suffer anymore for his part in the accident.

Ronnie made a mistake. Please give him the benefit of turning his life around. Your brother was his best friend and I promise you that not a day goes by that Ronnie does not wish he could take it all back and not a day goes by that he does not wish he could trade places with his best friend. He lives with the overwhelming guilt for the terrible mistake he made. Ruining his life will not help you heal any faster but forgiveness might. He is not living it up; he is living a life of sorrow, guilt and regret. Please find it in your heart to forgive him; you know it is what your brother would want you to do

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family

in the 4 years since this accident my family has not recieved a penny from the MoDOT and we do not want money we only want our family member Jemma Dant back in our loving arms not burried in some cemetery at age 28
there was a cross on the side of the highway where Jemma was killed but the MoDOT has refused to let it stay up and it is now torn down and thrown over the intersection the Modot should at least let us put a sign of some sort to remember our lost loved one this is unfair to the Dant families and other families like us
