A fiery crash in the portion of 1-64 that goes through East St. Louis left one truck driver seriously injured. In fact, the wreckage will cause the highway to be shut down until at least rush hour. Witnesses of the accident said that clouds of black smoke started billowing from the truck as it lay on its side with the cab crushed in. Rescuers got the driver out about an hour later on a stretcher and he was reported to have serious injuries. The clean up for the truck will be extensive, as the Illinois department of transportation has to wait for news on what to do with the diesel and hydraulic material. Continue reading
A crash involving an SUV on Highway 50 near Buth Lane resulted in the death of 79 year old Glendale Morton of Linn, Mo. Morton was driving westbound when he crossed the centerline of the highway and hit an SUV, driven by Kevin E. Lay, head-on. Lay suffered moderate injuries but Morton was pronounced dead at the scene. A young man from O’Fallon was killed early Saturday morning after a head-on collision with a tractor trailer. The young man, identified as Kyle Lauders, had been going the wrong direction down 40 when he crashed into the tractor trailer, driven by Danny Lanier. The crash caused an explosion which burned the truck cab and part of the tractor trailer. Lauders was taken to St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur where he died just after 3:30 Saturday afternoon. The police suspect that Lauders may have been drinking. Continue reading
